Precision Surface Mining
Vermeer is known in the industry for decades for their experience and technology to cut rock. This know-how has been taken one step further and applied to precision surface mining with the Vermeer Terrain Leveler.
Precision surface mining revolutionizes the mining industry by its ability to mine selectively without the need for drilling and blasting. By eliminating several steps in the mining process the total cost of operation can be lowered.

Advantages & Benefits Precision Surface Mining
No blasting
Not only is it becoming increasingly regulated, blasting is dangerous, harmful for the environment, unsafe and requires an outside crew.
With the innovative Terrain Leveler blasting is simply not needed anymore.
No ripping
Mostly used for overburden removal at sites prior to mining, these machines create an inconsistent end-product and extra expenses.
The Terrain Leveler easily handles overburden removal in addition to surface mining.
No drilling
This additional equipment is required to drill holes for blasting applications.
However, when replaced with the Terrain Leveler, blasting is no longer needed and neither are the vertical drills. The unique excavation process of the Terrain Leveler will do it all!
No mine trucks
To transport the excavated large material to the primary crusher large haul trucks are deployed. These haul trucks are both costly in time and money.
With the Terrain Leveler these haul trucks are no longer needed, as it produces an end product that is suitable for quick-loading to regular highway trucks
No primary crushing
Primary crushers are needed to prepare the large pieces of material for the secondary crusher.
With the Terrain Leveler the primary crushers are no longer needed, as it produces the material in a size that is small enough for the secondary crusher. Or you can simply eliminate the entire crushing process!
The Precision Surface Miner
The surface miner is a continuous excavation solution consisting of a heavy-duty tractor and a specialized cutting drum attachment. Operating with the drum positioned at the rear, the machine moves forward to penetrate and extract the ore body in a single pass. This process leaves the excavated material in a neat windrow behind the surface miner, where it can be easily collected by front-end loaders. Capable of cutting at depths up to 70 cm, this equipment offers the surgical precision needed to excavate thin partings while maintaining the raw power required for large-scale mass excavation projects..
Key Advantages of the Vermeer Surface Miner:
Simplified Engineering: Designed with a hydrostatic transmission, the surface miner reduces mechanical complexity by utilizing fewer moving parts than traditional mechanical drive systems.
Superior Stability: A wide track width and low center of gravity ensure machine stability on uneven terrain, while dual hydrostatic tracks allow for 360-degree counter-rotation and maximum maneuverability.
Precision Flooring: The rear-mounted, top-down cutting action prevents the machine from constantly driving over the broken material. Additionally, an integrated tilt mechanism allows the operator to manage the bench grade effectively, resulting in a perfectly smooth floor.
Special features

GPS Technology
An optional GPS Technology can be used to create a mine-by-line plan that can be uploaded to the GPS System on the Vermeer Terrain Leveler – then the machine will automatically cut to the plan.

Suppression System
An optional dust suppression system features an enclosed cutting head with two large vacuums that pull dust into baghouses & drop it beneath the machine reducing the dust entering the air.

SmartTEC Control
SmartTEC Control software displays the status of critical elements of machine performance – alerting the operator for recommended control adjustment.
Other Applications
The Vermeer surface miner excels across diverse operational environments. Explore the applications below to see how this technology delivers high productivity and measurable impact where traditional methods fall short.
Civil Construction
Cutting canals and building islands, foundations for buildings, retention ponds, water spillways and golf courses
(Haul) road construction
Eliminate the usage of bulldozers and mill the rock in-situ with a better particle size distribution. In combination with a GPS system a perfect, sloped road can be constructed.
Demolition
Excavate closer to existing infrastructure without using explosions, one of the benefits of using a Vermeer Terrain Leveler. On top of that, a smaller particle size will be created so no need to crush the material.
Developing new communities
Use the Vermeer Terrain Leveler to prepare sites for new communities.
With the optional dust suppression system it can work in urban areas without any disruptions.
Lowering tunnel floors
With the earlier mentioned advantages of the Vermeer Terrain Leveler and the ability to create vertical highwalls no auxiliary equipment is needed to cut the boundary walls.
